WhatsApp Business Pricing Changed on 1 October: What Indian Small Businesses Must Do
For many Indian small businesses, WhatsApp is the sales channel. Enquiries arrive there, quotes are sent there, and order updates go out there. So a change to how WhatsApp charges for business messages is not a technical footnote. It changes the cost of selling.
Two changes matter right now. One took effect on 1 October. The other has a hard deadline of 31 December.
What changed on 1 October
According to Meta's own pricing documentation for the WhatsApp Business Platform (Meta for Developers):
- Service messages are no longer free without limit. Each business phone number gets 1,000 free service messages a month. From the 1,001st, Meta charges. Unused free messages do not carry over, and the count resets every month.
- Utility messages in an open chat are charged again. Since July 2025, utility templates (order updates, payment reminders, appointment confirmations) sent while a customer chat was open had been free. From 1 October, they are billed at the regular rate. Utility messages sent within a free entry point window, such as after a customer clicks an ad that opens WhatsApp, remain free.
- Without a payment method, messages stop. Meta notes that messages beyond the free tier are not delivered if no payment method is set up.
These rules apply to businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform, usually through a provider such as Wati, Interakt, AiSensy, Gupshup, or a CRM integration. The free WhatsApp Business app on your phone works differently.
The India deadline: move to INR billing by 31 December
Meta launched billing in Indian rupees for eligible businesses on 1 January 2026. Eligible accounts must be migrated to INR by 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027, Meta says it will no longer deliver messages from non-INR accounts of eligible customers (Meta for Developers).
If your WhatsApp account still bills in US dollars through your provider, ask them now whether you are eligible and when they will migrate you. A missed deadline here is not a price increase. It is your messages stopping during the January sales season.
India's marketing message rate also rose on 1 January 2026, and the authentication-international rate rose on 1 April 2026. India is not among the markets whose rates changed on 1 October. Check the current India rate card in Meta's pricing documentation or with your provider before budgeting.
What this means in practice
For a small business sending a few hundred customer replies a month, the 1,000 free service messages will cover most of it. The businesses that will feel it are:
- Busy support numbers that handle thousands of chats a month.
- Businesses that send order and payment updates during open chats, which used to be free.
- Teams that use one number for everything, from sales to support to reminders.
The bigger risk is not the cost. It is not knowing the cost, because nobody is watching message volumes.
A seven-point checklist
- Confirm a payment method is on file with Meta or your provider. Without it, messages beyond the free tier are not delivered.
- Ask your provider about INR migration and get a date in writing before December.
- Find out your monthly volumes by category: service, utility, marketing, and authentication.
- Check the current India rates on Meta's rate card or your provider's pricing page.
- Review your automated templates. Are you sending updates customers do not need? Every unnecessary template now costs money.
- Use click-to-WhatsApp ads deliberately. Conversations that start from an ad open a free entry point window, so plan follow-ups to fit within it.
- Move routine updates to cheaper channels where it makes sense, such as email for invoices and receipts.
The bigger lesson
WhatsApp is no longer a free channel that happens to work for business. It is a paid business platform with rules, rates, and deadlines, like email and SMS before it. That makes it worth managing properly: one owner, clear templates, connected to your CRM, and reported on every month.
Our CRM implementation work connects WhatsApp to your CRM so every conversation has an owner and a record, and our marketing automation service sets up the templates and follow-ups that are worth paying for.
