ChatGPT Image Ads: What Advertising Inside AI Assistants Means for Small Businesses

On 5 October, OpenAI announced that it will start testing visual ads in ChatGPT later this month. The ads appear next to images people ask ChatGPT to create, are clearly labelled, and, according to OpenAI, will not influence the answers ChatGPT gives (TechCrunch). The test starts in the US with a small group of advertisers.

On its own, one new ad format is a small story. Put it next to the rest of the year and it is a big one. ChatGPT introduced ads earlier in 2026, opened a self-serve Ads Manager in beta with cost-per-click bidding in May (OpenAI), expanded ads to India in August, and now reaches 1.2 billion people a week (TechCrunch). HubSpot has already become the first CRM to integrate with ChatGPT Ads (HubSpot).

AI assistants are becoming an advertising channel, in the same way search and social did. Small businesses should understand it before they spend on it.

What is different about ads in an AI assistant

The buyer is in the middle of a task. Someone generating an image for a birthday invite, planning an office party, or comparing software is not scrolling. They are trying to get something done. An ad that helps with that task fits. An ad that interrupts it will be ignored.

The context is the conversation, not a keyword. Search ads match words. Ads in an assistant are placed based on whether the conversation suits an ad. OpenAI says its guardrails keep ads out of sensitive conversations, and it has added an option to exclude placements by phrase (gHacks).

Advertisers do not see conversations. OpenAI says advertisers get aggregated results "without sharing conversations or personal details" (OpenAI). You will know that an ad worked, not what the person asked.

Measurement is still young. OpenAI is adding conversion tracking and a long list of measurement partners, but benchmarks for what a good result looks like do not exist yet.

Should a small business advertise in ChatGPT now?

For most small businesses, not yet, unless three things are true:

  1. You already know your numbers. You know your cost per lead from Google or Meta, so you can tell whether a new channel is better or worse. If you do not, our CAC and LTV calculator is a good place to start.
  2. Your offer suits a task. Products and services people plan, design, or compare (events, travel, home, software, professional services) fit better than impulse buys.
  3. You can afford to experiment. Early channels reward testers, but they also waste money. Ring-fence a small test budget you are prepared to lose.

If those are not in place, the better investment is the free route into AI assistants: being the business they mention without paying.

The free channel matters more than the paid one

Ads sit next to the answer. The answer itself is still earned. When someone asks ChatGPT for the best HubSpot partner in Pune or the best caterer for a corporate event, the businesses named in the reply are the ones the model can describe clearly and trust.

That depends on things you control:

  • One clear description of what you do and who it is for, repeated on your website, LinkedIn, and directory listings.
  • Pages that answer real buyer questions, with structured data so machines can read them. Our free schema markup generator creates the code.
  • Proof that can be quoted: case studies, reviews, specific results.

Our free visibility audit for Google and AI shows how you score today.

How to prepare for when you do advertise

  • Create visual assets that show the product in use. OpenAI's examples show products and services in real situations, not logos on a plain background.
  • Write landing pages for the task, not the brand. Someone who clicks from a conversation about planning a team offsite should land on your offsite page, not your homepage.
  • Track every click. Use consistent UTM tags so you can compare ChatGPT with search and social. Our UTM link builder keeps the naming clean.
  • Decide your exclusions up front. List the topics you never want to appear next to, and use negative phrases from day one.

The takeaway

AI assistants will become a paid channel like search and social, and the businesses that test early, with clear numbers, will learn fastest. But the paid placement sits beside an answer the assistant writes on its own. Earn your place in that answer first. It costs nothing per click, and it lasts.

If you want help with both, our AI search visibility work makes your business easier for assistants to recommend, and a fixed-price growth audit will tell you whether paid AI ads belong in your plan yet.
