Hidden characters Removes zero-width spaces, joiners, soft hyphens, and byte-order marks.
Non-breaking spaces Turns them into normal spaces so the line wraps.
Dashes An em dash becomes a spaced hyphen. An en dash becomes a hyphen.
Quotes Curly quotes, low quotes, and primes become straight quotes.
Ellipsis The single ellipsis character becomes three dots.
Trailing whitespace Trims spaces and tabs at the end of each line, and blank space at the end of the text.
Asterisks Removes Markdown bold and italic markers. The words stay.
Markdown headings Drops the # marks at the start of a line.
Other Markdown Lists, links, images, code marks, quotes, rules, strikethrough, and underscore emphasis. The words stay.

The cleaner changes characters and formatting marks. It leaves your words, numbers, sentence breaks, and paragraph breaks in place. It does not rewrite a sentence, and it does not score whether a model wrote the draft.

Models pick up em dashes, curly quotes, and Markdown from the edited prose they were trained on. Those marks look odd in a plain text field, a social post, or an editor that does not render Markdown. Cleaning them is a format step, done before you edit the words yourself.
